Understanding Medical Insurance vs. Vision Insurance

When it comes to eye care, understanding the difference between medical insurance and vision insurance is essential. While both play a role in maintaining your eye health, they cover different services.

Vision Insurance

Vision insurance may cover a routine comprehensive exam for preventative care and serves as a discount plan for prescription glasses and contact lenses. Vision insurance is designed to address your overall visual needs and ensure your prescriptions are up-to-date.

Medical Insurance

Medical insurance covers any eye-related medical condition/disease, such as those listed below. These conditions often require diagnostic tests, treatment, or even surgical procedures that go beyond routine and preventative vision care.

  • Eye infection
  • Eye injury
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye allergies
  • Glaucoma or high eye pressures
  • Macular degeneration
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Hypertensive Retinopathy

Which Do You Need?

If you're coming in for a routine check-up or to update your glasses or contacts, vision insurance will typically apply. However, if you're experiencing signs or symptoms that require discussion of that condition during your exam or if you're managing an ongoing eye condition, your visit may be billed through medical insurance. In some cases, we are able (or even required) to coordinate benefits through both of your insurance carriers.

At InSight Eyecare we're here to guide you through the process and ensure you get the care you need. If you're unsure about your coverage or have questions, our insurance team is happy to assist!
